One blog, one year

It has been roughly a year since I wrote the previous post on my blog. Even though I haven’t written anything on my blog you may have seen information about me on my mother’s blog: “A little something to share”. I’ve had a very busy yet exciting year.

Fall 2008:

School started, I was a sophomore. I found a strong love for drama and decided to audition for the school play Romeo and Juliet. I failed to get a role and instead became ASM (Assistant Stage Manager) and helped move parts of the set at every show and rehearsal and also helped the actors/ actresses with their entrances. As well as helping out in the school play I was also taking four honors classes (English, Biology, Choir, and Orchestra). Because I was neglecting those classes my grades slowly went down and I was no longer a straight-A-student (Mom may have blogged about that).

Winter 2008:

After Romeo and Juliet the drama department was preparing for our next show, Rumors a confusing comedy with a very small cast. Yet again I failed to get into the cast and was helping out with the stage crew. A few days before the first rehearsal a friend of mine came into the theater while I was painting a wall and asked if I would like to audition for a musical that he was composing and directing for his senior project. I agreed to audition and found out three days later that I had successfully gotten the lead role as the mother in his musical The Little Match Girl based of the Christmas story. Although we started rehearsals in late November the director hadn’t found the whole cast until after winter break in early January.

Spring 2008:

We started vigorous rehearsals for The Little Match Girl in the middle of January, unfortunately the rehearsals were being held in a tiny apartment in downtown Bellingham barely big enough to fit our cast. As we got better and better we moved to larger places and finally ended up practicing in our schools choir room and at Western and Whatcom Community Colleges. The musical was fantastic and had a full house opening night and had more than half a house at both of the last shows (the whole show can be found at this website www.youtube.com/user/DustinHahnMusic) My friend (the director/composer) presented his senior project to the judges at the end of the school year and – to his surprise – graduated at the end of the year. He was elated to leave Bellingham High School and told me they were the worst four years of his life. Shortly after graduation Dustin won a composing contest and was able to have four people play his quartet at a concert in Seattle earlier this summer (also at www.youtube.com/user/DustinHahnMusic).

Summer 2009 (so far):

As seen on my mom’s blog I got my hair cut and I met my younger half-sister Elizabeth. Also, this summer I’m hosting an exchange student. My exchange students name is Rina, she’s 15 years old, a twin and wants to be a dog breeder when she grows up. She’s a little shy and is still getting used to the time change so she’s tired and unfortunately both those variables affect her accuracy at speaking English. I will have more to post about Rina within the next week, in the meantime check out the musical I was in on the web address www.youtube.com/user/DustinHahnMusic it’s titled The Little Match Girl- part (1-11) I’m sure you’ll love it and remember to leave comments for him because he’s wanting ideas for his next musical. Love everlasting,
-M.J.
